Final Phase
Over the course of this week leading up to April 17th, I will be preparing a press kit, finalizing the documentary website and doing the final touches to the production. It has been a long journey until to this point.
Learning how different the views of some people are and how they apply to their lives can be a scary thing, especially when someone's life is on the line.
From the G-Code, to black secrecy, to hazing; they all share some things in common. But at the end of the day we want our audience to focus on the stories that we have decided to tell and make their own conclusion as to how important it is to comply with authorities in the wake of uncertainty and negativity.
Three different cities, multiple touching stories and one strong attempt to educate the masses.
This will be a 15-min. documentary entitled: The G-Code: Black Silence.
I hope you enjoy this production and acknowledge the amount of time and effort that went into making this project a success.
Stay tuned...

Next Phase
Now that the script and log are both complete, I will begin to edit and get a feel for the entire vision of the final documentary. Once all the voice overs have been recorded I can start to get a sense of what is missing and what needs the most attention.
I'm very happy with the footage we've received over the last couple of weeks and I can't wait to see how it all longs once it is together on the timeline and closer to the production that we have been planning for since January.
I hope you are looking forward to the final product of my first documentary as much as I am. From this point it is going to take careful editing and putting my creative juices to work.

Tally Experience #1
Since it was difficult to get in touch with any of our official contacts we decided to take a different route and include the information but get the feedback of those directly affected by hazing and the new changes being implemented at Florida A&M University to monitor student organizations intake process.
We decided to take it to the streets and get feedback from concerned students and those already in on-campus organizations.
Some people were blind to the concept of hazing, others said they would never tolerate it. The main point that everyone tried to stress was that no one is going to do anything to you that you didn't say was okay. A lot of students perspective was that those that get hazed don't like to tell. They go through it to try to fit in, not realizing that the secret code within organization are currently having a negative affect on the university as a whole.

Philly Experience #2
After getting the perspective from a younger generation about the G-Code, we turned to a undercover Philadelphia Police Officer that took us on a tour of the hard streets of Kensington, PA during the prime hours of prostitution and drug dealing.
He allowed us to take a ride in his vehicle with him as he spoke about the importance of people sharing any and all information with authorities pertaining to crimes.
He allowed us to take a ride in his vehicle with him as he spoke about the importance of people sharing any and all information with authorities pertaining to crimes.
The officer has been a cop for over 20 years and has dealt with issues of people not talking frequently ultimately leading up to crimes not getting solved. It doesn't just affect those involved in the case but the community as a whole because the offender or suspects get to roam the streets freely because citizens are afraid and typically living in fear.
David and Chopz both agreed that snitching comes with dire consequences, but when it has something to do with you directly sometimes you're left with no choice but to speak up or hold inside of you a secret that may slowly burn within you forever.
The undercover officer spoke about personal experiences he himself had to endure and said that the police always needs the publics help in order to put a serious dent in the amount of crime that occurs in and around the City of Philadelphia.

Philly Experience #1
Before arriving to Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to shoot some scenery in Delaware which is where two young men were murdered doing a drug deal gone wrong. The two men were from West Philadelphia and we were headed there to speak with their close friends about first hand encounters and about specific information pertaining to the incident.
David McIntosh, a childhood friend of Keifer and Mike, was very distraught over the recent killings of his two friends. He expressed that it was a accident gone wrong and that God took his friends way too soon. We followed David around the neighborhood so that we could experience in depth the connection that he shared with the two individuals.
After taking a brief ride through the city with David, we went back to Keifer's mothers house where they often spent most of their free time. Her house was known as the spot where everybody could go to feel a sense of comfort and just be together with the people that mean the most to you.
David and another friend, Chopz Hamilton expressed their thoughts on the G-Code and how secrecy can directly affect you. Then we sat down with both of them in the garage of Keifer's mothers house as they elaborated on the events that occurred the night their friends lost their lives to senseless violence.
They shared special moments with us that they had with Keifer and Mike. Both David and Chopz were still outraged and in anger that someone had taken their friends lives but they understood the importance of people coming forth that knew information about the murders because that is the only way the killer could be brought to justice. Later, we found out that the one who shot the two was a former acquaintance of Mike.

Tampa Experience #2
After visiting the grave with the entire immediate family, we had a chance to get some great footage of a round table discussion about the family's experiences with Coryell throughout his life.
This is when real elements of the story began to expose themselves. The mother and aunt of the murdered young man urged for someone to come forth with information about the case. No one has come forth but it is believed that some individuals have information about the details that occurred the night of the murder.
To me it was clear that all they longed for was closure from the person who had taken away Coryell's life.
Some thereafter, we went on ride through the tough areas of Tampa and ended up at the exact location were Coryell had lost his life and taken his last breaths. It was truly an eerie feeling.
We were guided through parts of the city that were known for high volumes of crime to occur. Being there to capture such a heart-felt experience was a nice way to start of the beginning footage of a great documentary that could hopefully be an aid to bringing justice to such a tragedy.

Tampa Experience #1
The first location for shooting the documentary was in Tampa, FL. This would start us off on the right foot and allow us to test the waters a little with shooting styles and how effective it would be to obtain good hard audio.
Our first story consist of two strong elements that had deeply affected the lives of our interviewees. There was a unsolved murder of a transgender family member and another person who had been wrongly accused of a crime and currently surviving over 20 years behind bars.
Although the main focus of the documentary is "The G-Code" many more aspects of the story and struggle began to quickly reveal themselves. Our first sound bite ever shot was of a gentleman by the name if "Scooter". He talked about the effects that black silence has on a community as a whole. When he was growing up in the tough sections of Tampa's hoods and ghettos, he gained knowledge that led him into a different direction.
Not knowing how much of a touchy subject we were about to embark on with the lost of his nephew, a transgender named Cory; Scooter quickly showed strong emotions for the unsolved murder that had claimed a close family member's life.
After getting a little more comfortable, the rest of the family began to open up and it didn't feel like a documentary anymore but that we were apart of the family and they shared their grief so that the pain could essentially be felt at a high degree.
One moment that impacted me the most out of the entire trip to Tampa was when we actually visited the grave site of Cory, who lived his life as "Coryell".
It was then when I realized the documentary was started to fall into place because we were on the right path and had selected the best people to effectively tell their story.

Second Session
Recap of Sunday; January 22, 2012
Once meeting up for our second session, we started throwing out actual names of people to interview and explained the reasoning behind picking those individuals.
Based on the story elements we tried to cover every angle and have a valuable source for each Act included within the documentary. It is very crucial we stay true to our theme. We realize that there may be some obstacles with finding people willing to be filmed on camera talking about their experiences but we're going to make it possible.
The narrator or narrators we decide to choose could really make or break our approach. What we aim for is someone with a voice that demands the attention of an entire room, so that you can't help but to listen to what that person has to say. Whoever we decide on, we have faith they'll do just fine.
Towards the end of this session we had collected a lot more information from each other and brought a lot of things to the table. Rather it was research topics or potential questions we could answer in our film. The main theme of our doc is what we'll be more focused on in the weeks to come, along with determining how we intend to structure the three different Acts. We already have some nice ways on how we could build up the overall concept of our story.
Next Session - Prepare more structure ideas, Finalize list of sources and people to interview, Think about the different elements each Act should contain.
First Formal Planning Session
Recap of Saturday; January 21, 2012
The Early Bird, gets the Worm..
Proper planning for our upcoming documentary is very important and requires us to get an early start in order to be ahead of the game.
Before we could begin to visualize our documentary on a greater scale, we first briefly discussed different story angles. We talked about the various elements of story-telling we could include, wrote down some creative ideas and proceeded to discuss potential narrators for the documentary, that would convey our message effectively to the audience.
The G-CODE: Black Silence
Reporter - Ramzey L. Smith
Videographer/Editor - myself
There's no "I" in "TEAM"..
Working together on such an important project has its challenges but me & Ramzey are eager to get the ball rolling. After putting things into perspective a little bit, we started to think about different shooting locations we could use in order to obtain good footage and began to compile a list of potential interviewees that would be perfect to be featured in the documentary. Something that we regard as a top priority is having a videography style of recording like never seen before. We want to amaze people throughout our entire presentation from the camera angles, to the amount of information and knowledge obtained while watching our groundbreaking documentary.
Next Session - Prepare a solid list of sources, Think of plots for each Acts, Finalize potential narrators, Create blogs.
